8 effective ways to improve your morning routine

1. Glass of water and lemon (and ginger, if you want a metabolism kick) You’ve heard this thousands of times, but there’s a reason everyone does it, right? Water and lemon kickstart your day in the most positive way, by providing a slight detoxifying effect and increasing general well being. If you want it extra energising, add some ginger. We guarantee you’ll be awake in a minute. 2. Start with protein, instead of lactose Cereals or yogurt may be a standard breakfast, but on some days you should have a protein-rich breakfast like an egg-white spinach omelette or some poached eggs and bacon. Your body will work harder to digest it, and a little protein doesn’t hurt anyone. 3. Drink one litre of water We heard this tip from Cindy Crawford, who drinks 1L of water before she leaves the house in the morning. That way, she already has half of her daily water intake out of the way, and remains hydrated. 4. Open the curtains, let the light in There’s nothing more depressing than a space without light. When it’s early morning and all you want to do is crawl up in bed, it’s even worse. As soon as you wake up, open the windows to let the sunlight in. It might hurt your eyes (and your head) but in thirty seconds you’ll be used to it, and your mood will instantly lift. 5. Exercise If Anna Wintour wakes up at 5:45 for a 1-hour tennis lesson every morning, you can set aside thirty minutes for some yoga, running, or HIIT. You will already have your exercise out of the way, and can go on with the day in an energetic manner. Besides, you won’t eat as much, since you won’t want that early morning exercise to go to waste. 6. Wake up 10 minutes earlier to avoid rushing We don’t know about you, but we hate rushing in the morning – stress so early on isn’t good for you. By setting your alarm clock ten minutes earlier than usual, you will get more time for yourself – whether it’s spending some extra time on your makeup, retouching your manicure, or finishing the last pages of your novel. 7. Trade coffee for tea We know, we know. It seems like an impossible task. If you can’t trade it completely, try having just one cup of green tea every morning – it’s high in antioxidants and sets your body up for the day. If you’re willing to go that one step further and give up your caffeine addiction completely, ease into it slowly, but avoiding coffee one day a week, and slowly increasing that number. 8. Start the morning the night before If you have the time, prepare your bag and outfit the night before. Organise your bag – get rid of the loose change, and cheques – and decide on the outfit for the next day, hang it up or steam it, make sure there’s no stains. No one wants to waste their precious morning standing for an hour in front of the wardrobe, deciding what to wear, and finding out it’s too creased or needs to be taken to the dry cleaner.
