Chanel comes to Cuba

Chanel has showcased its Cruise collection in Havana, Cuba for the first time since the 1959 communist revolution. The runway show was held on one of Cuba’s main promenades in Havana with celebrities such as Gisele Bundchen and Tilda Swinton flying to the island to be at the show. Lagerfeld said of the Cruise collection that it was inspired by the “cultural richness and opening up of Cuba” and harked back to the roots of the Fashion House. Chanel showcasing in Cuba is yet more proof of its thawing relations with the west, with former president Fidel Castro’s own grandson Tony being in attendance. The aspiring model sang the praises of the event saying “It is an honor for all Cubans for this big event to take place here.” However there has been some backlash to Chanel’s choice of showing in Cuba as residents were held behind police cordon lines and the VIP guests rolled up to the show in antique sedans. Also Cuba is a country deprived of wealth and lavishness where most citizens couldn’t afford the cost of Chanel products. See some stunning shots from the night below:
