Lessons of a Social Media Star: Ciara O’Doherty

Ciara O'Doherty
Congratulations to our third winner of the #GalaxyStyle competition, Aoife Conway. Aoife is a Youtuber from Dublin who makes videos about fashion, beauty and style, with a following of over 20,000! We are delighted to have her on board, reporting the Dublin Fashion Festival with us. Watch her entry here: The Galaxy blogger workshops, which are being held each Saturday of this month, are in full swing. For the third instalment of these intimate events, Ciara O’Doherty gave an insightful presentation about how to make it on Youtube from her own experience of building a loyal following on the platform. Aspiring Youtubers filled the Blue Room of the Dean Hotel eager to learn how best to maximise the social media website to push their videos towards success. If you missed it, here are Ciara’s top tips:
Content Here is where you start, you must decide what it is that your channel will be about, will you talk about fashion and style or will it be more of a vlog? What is it that you can offer that other’s can’t? Identity that and use it. If you can teach people something new then they will come back for more. most importantly, you need to be yourself as this is your unique selling point, because no one else can be you. Exploit it! Equipment and Editing Ciara notes the importance of having the right equipment when creating your videos. People will be more likely to subscribe to you if they look professional and high quality. The most important thing is sound, as it is the first thing people will notice. This stuff is expensive and you’ll never be able to buy all the latest tech at once. Invest in equipment incrementally when you need it. Ciara still uses iMovie, which everyone has on their Mac, to edit her videos. It would have been a waste if she had bought Final Cut when she didn’t need it! Get your videos seen For people to stumble across your videos, you need to optimise your chances of coming up as a suggestion when people use a search engine. To do this, use relevant and popular tags that you think people will search for. Your title should be engaging and describe the video, as often it is the title as well as the thumbnail, which will help potential viewers decide if they are interested in watching. Ensure that you don’t use clickbait, this probably will get you more views but will not help you build a following and will certainly damage your reputation. Growth Ciara has a few tips for growing out your fanbase. Firstly, the Youtube star encourages that you promote your channel and videos across your social media platforms, that way more people will be reached when you upload new content. Collaborate with other Youtubers and blogger that you know. This is mutually beneficial to both parties as it allows you to tap into a network of people that you may not have had access to before and who may be interested in what you post. O’Doherty stressed the importance of being consistent when it comes to growing subscribers. People will subscribe if they know what they can expect, and this is true when it comes to content and scheduling. She advises posting once a week to start. On a parting note, Ciara makes sure to add that if you want to make it in Youtube, it takes a lot of hard work and determination but the payoff can be so worth it!   Ciara O'Doherty
