Pride 2016: How did we get here?

Due to the excitement of the approaching Dublin Pride coupled with recent events in Orlando, we have decided to launch the “frockadvisor: What it means to be an Ally” segment. First up, a history lesson. How did the multicoloured rainbow flag we all know and love become an LGBT symbol and what does it mean? The flag was designed in 1978 by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker with the most common variant being finalised in 2008. Following the assassination of the openly gay San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk, Flag demand greatly increased. The Flag garnered national acclaim in 1989 after John Stout sued his landlords and won. This cause occurred following an attempt to prohibit the display of the Pride Flag at his West Hollywood apartment.

The colours stand for the following:

Red – Life

Orange– Healing

Yellow– Sunlight

Green – Nature

Blue – Serenity/Harmony

Violet – Spirit

This multicolored ethos was proudly displayed in Orlando this week when the city’s residents banded together as “Angels” in an anti-protest against the Westboro Baptist Church during the Pulse tragedy funeral services. White wings of solidarity to protect the families of those fallen. How could you not feel pride?
