The best skincare routine for your 40’s and 50’s
We’ve discussed the type of skin care regimen you should undertake in your 20’s and 30’s, however, now, lets focus on how to look after your skin in your 40’s and 50’s. Our skin inevitably changes constantly and because of that we need to tailor our routines to suit our skin. In your 40’s and 50’s, moisturising and keeping the skin hydrated is key to maintaining healthy skin.
Ideal skincare regimen for those in their 40’s..
Your skincare regimen in your 40’s should be all about adding moisture to your skin and also, using products with collagen-building ingredients like peptides. The lines between your brows and around our eyes and mouth are unfortunately more visible in your 40’s than your 30’s.
⋅ Step 1: Because you will use retinol regularly, it’s important to get rid of any flaking skin. Ensure that your cleanse using a cream cleanser like Ponds Cold Cream Cleanser, in combination with a gentle face cleansing brush, like No7 Beautiful Skin Cleansing Brush, which will help to remove dead skin cells.
⋅ Step 2: SPF should be worn daily! This will prevent any further sun damage. It’s also advisable to choose a product that contains antioxidants in it as this can help reverse some of the damage you already have. We love Clinique Sun Protection Face Cream.
⋅ Step 3: Use a serum as most contain retinoids and peptides (two ingredients which should be in your routine). Retinol improves the skin’s surface and peptides help to rebuild collagen. Although extremely pricey, this serum by Lancer is amazing! Also, don’t forget to moisturise, moisturise, moisturise with a good quality moisturiser.
Ideal skincare regimen for those in their 50’s..
Your 50’s is all about moisturising. Adding a surge of moisture to the skin should be your main priority. Some of the biggest issues you will encounter is sagging skin. Use creams and serums that contain peptides, retinoids or alpha hydroxy or amino acids.
⋅ Step 1: Use a hydrating cream cleanser like, Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Gentle Hydrating Cleanser. This will ensure to hydrate the skin as you cleanse.
⋅ Step 2: As always, choose a moisturiser that contains SPF to keep skin hydrated and protected.
⋅ Step 3: Every morning, apply a serum that’s rich in peptides, under your SPF as this will help build collagen. Opt for one that also contains antioxidants to fight free radicals or hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture. An amazing serum is Radical Advanced Peptide Antioxidant Serum.
⋅ Step 4: At night time, apply a retinoid like, Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair, before your moisturiser.
⋅ Step 5: Bringing it back to the basics, include petroleum jelly into your skincare regimen. Petroleum jelly is amazing at locking in moisture, which is more important now than ever. Best applied at night time but only on a clean, washed face. It is after all, one of the main ingredients in Creme de la Mer!
