The Opticians: Eclectic & Unforgettable

Dublin opticians
The Opticians began life in a charming central Dublin basement back in 2012 under the name Molloy and Dowling. The Dublin opticians was originally set up to sell vintage frames with stock sourced from factory clearances and practice closures. Just two years after throwing open their doors to the eccentric eyewear starved public, The Opticians was awarded Best Specialist Shop by The Irish Times in 2014 – and rightly so! In 2015 The Opticians moved to the über trendy Crow St, following on from the initial success of the move, Molloy and Dowling opened a second store on Kevin St. Speaking in their growing success, co-founder, Colm Molloy divulges:

Vintage eyewear was a great starting point, as it showed us that there was an appetite for unique and unusual glasses, glasses that weren’t following trends but standing on their own merit. We try to follow this when choosing new stock for the shop too. We pick the unusual colours, the quirky shapes, the styles that won’t be in every shop in the city. We’re also really fussy about quality, so we travel a lot and choose our suppliers based on their quality of manufacturing and aesthetics, we don’t just go for mainstream brands. You may not have heard of the guys who designed your glasses, but you can tell they love their job.”

This unforgettable store is unlike any other shop you’ve been to before. The Opticians is the antithesis to the clinical high street chains – they strive for something much better, something truly remarkable. Their decor is distinctive, idiosyncratic and somehow familiar, all at the same time. The store looks as though it was plucked from Berlin or Copenhagen side street- yet it still feels distinctly Irish. Perhaps this Irishness stems from their frank and downright hilarious staff. Co-owner, Colm Molloy continues:

”Our motto is ‘We’re the best opticians we could imagine.’ We only stock products we believe in, and we want people to enjoy coming to us, so we’re all really friendly but we’re also all really frank with customers if they pick something that doesn’t fit well or that we don’t like the look of. You won’t always get flattery but you’ll get great frames. We deliberately went for a slightly mad eclectic décor in each of the shops instead of a clinical look. It’s like choosing glasses in your living room. People seem to like it, which we really appreciate. […] It’s a cooperatively owned Irish business, so you’ll always be talking to one of the owners, and all of our staff are gas. Come see us”

dublin opticians Frames start from €50 including lenses, and when you buy one pair a second pair is half price, so you could land yourself two pairs from just €75 – YES PLEASE.
