When Karl Lagerfeld announced that he was going to showcase the next Chanel collection in Havana, he was making a politically statement. The frontman of Chanel knew that if he played his cards right, he would get enough free publicity. As Cuba begins to slowly lax it’s restrictions on American imports, the country is experiencing somewhat of a capitalistic renaissance. Havana is a fascinating city, stuck in a time warp.  Lagerfeld is known for holding his fashion shows in historically and culturally decisive regions, he was after all, the man that put a catwalk on the Great Wall of China. But this show in Cuba’s capital does capture a forgotten grandeur of this once colonial hub. The main boulevard on which the show is set is evocative of European excess, but simultaneously couldn’t be further from that.
