WATCH: Take a first look at new Loving trailer

“Tell the judge I love my wife.”

Based on a true story, Jeff Nichol’s Loving premiered at Cannes back in May to hugely positive reviews. The film, which is set back in the 50’s when inter-racial marriages were illegal in the state of Virginia, depicts the tumultuous marriage of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), not because of the couple themselves, but because of a racist, unfounded law for which they were thrown in jail on their return to Virginia after eloping to Washington DC. Eventually their case reached the Supreme Court in 1967, which overturned their convictions and determined the Virginian law as unconstitutional. Loving promises to be an emotional rollercoaster and an Oscar front-runner, with the movie depicting unabashed love in the face of racism and hate. Irish actress Ruth Negga, has exploded into Hollywood with this role and no doubt will be in consideration for an Oscar herself with American publication Variety writing that Loving “features two of the best American performances of the past several years.”
Loving releases in Irish cinemas nationwide 3rd February 2017
