“We don’t need to be married or mothers to be complete. We get to determine our own ‘happily ever after’ for ourselves.”- Jen Aniston
Following yet another “Jennifer Aniston is pregnant” media tabloid frenzy, the renowned actress who has no social media presence, decided to pen an entry to the Huffington Post highlighting the blatant body shaming and outright sexism placed on women in the public eye and by extension the everyday woman. This unsettling culture trend spanning decades has been orchestrated under the thinly veiled subterfuge of “The First Amendment”, “celebrity news” and “journalism”. Aniston eloquently criticizes our society for propping up a system that perpetuates an unattainable standard of beauty coupled with the ideal that a women’s value is based solely on her looks, marital status and maternal instinct. She also continues to highlight the fact that while the mainstream media has been covering her personal life, arguably more newsworthy stories have occurred such as wildfires, mass shooting and major decisions by the Supreme Court. This article provides a poignant (somewhat disturbing) angle towards the double standards placed on women in society today.
